When parents think about youth sports, they think basketball. Football. Soccer. Maybe baseball. Golf barely registers. It sounds expensive, slow, and boring — something for retired executives, not eight-year-olds.
That perception is wrong. And it is keeping your kid from one of the most valuable sports they could play.
Golf Is Not What You Think It Is
Golf teaches skills that no other youth sport comes close to matching:
- Patience— You cannot rush a golf swing. Every shot requires focus, composure, and the willingness to slow down in a world that tells kids to move faster
- Individual accountability— There is no team to blame. Every shot is yours. That level of personal responsibility builds character in ways team sports cannot replicate
- Etiquette and self-regulation— Golf is one of the only sports where athletes call penalties on themselves. Honesty is built into the game
- Focus under pressure— A three-foot putt with the match on the line teaches mental toughness that translates to exams, interviews, and every high-pressure moment in life
- Lifetime playability— Your kid can play golf at 8 and still play at 80. Very few sports offer that kind of longevity
The Access Problem
Here is why most kids never try golf: it is expensive. Green fees, lessons, clubs, shoes, range balls — the cost adds up fast. A basic set of youth golf clubs runs $150 to $300. A single lesson can cost $50 to $100. A round of golf at a public course in LA is $30 to $60.
For families already stretching their budget, golf is not even on the radar. And that means an entire generation of kids in underserved communities never gets to experience the sport — or the opportunities it creates.
What Most People Miss: Golf as a Career Tool
Golf is not just a sport. It is a networking tool that opens doors in business, education, and professional life. Deals are made on golf courses. Relationships are built over 18 holes. Scholarships are awarded to young golfers who would never have access to certain universities otherwise.
By the numbers:
- Over 90% of Fortune 500 CEOs play golf
- NCAA offers golf scholarships at more than 1,000 colleges and universities
- The golf industry generates over $84 billion annually in the US alone
When we give kids access to golf, we are not just teaching them a sport. We are giving them a key that unlocks rooms they might never otherwise enter.
FSL’s Youth Golf Program
At Fundamental Sports Labs, golf is one of our six core sports — and it is completely free. Here is what our program includes:
Equipment Provided
Every young golfer receives access to properly sized clubs, balls, tees, and range equipment at no cost. No family needs to buy a single piece of gear to get started.
Fundamentals-First Instruction
- Grip, stance, and posture
- Short game fundamentals — putting, chipping, and pitching
- Full swing mechanics — driver through wedges
- Course management and strategy
- Rules, etiquette, and sportsmanship
On-Course Experience
Learning golf on a driving range is not the same as playing on a course. FSL partners with local courses to give young athletes real on-course experience, including par-3 course play for beginners, full course rounds for intermediate and advanced players, and tournament preparation.
Who Should Try Golf?
Golf is especially powerful for:
- Kids who do not thrive in team sports— Some children prefer individual competition where they control the outcome
- Quiet or introverted kids— Golf rewards focus and internal composure, not volume and aggression
- Athletes looking for a scholarship edge— Golf scholarships are less competitive than basketball or football, with more opportunities per participant
- Any child who has never been given the chance— That is most kids in underserved communities
Getting Started Is Free
There is no tryout. No fee. No equipment to buy. Just show up and learn.
Sign your child up for FSL’s golf program and give them access to a sport that could change their trajectory. Or support our mission with a donation so more kids in Los Angeles get the chance to play.
