The good news: Los Angeles has more free after-school options than almost any city in the country. The bad news: they are scattered, inconsistently funded, and hard to find. This guide brings the best options together in one place.
Why After-School Programs Matter
The hours between 3 PM and 6 PM are the highest-risk window for youth in urban areas. Kids without structured activities during this time are significantly more likely to:
- Engage in risky behavior
- Fall behind academically
- Experience social isolation
- Be exposed to neighborhood violence
Quality after-school programs flip that equation. They keep kids safe, build skills, create community, and give parents the peace of mind they need to keep working.
Free After-School Programs in Los Angeles
LA City Parks and Recreation
The city operates after-school programming at more than 180 parks and recreation centers. Programs vary by location but typically include sports leagues, arts and crafts, homework help, and seasonal activities. Most are free or very low cost.
Boys and Girls Clubs of America — LA Locations
With multiple locations across Los Angeles County, Boys and Girls Clubs offer structured after-school environments with homework help, sports, STEM activities, and leadership programs. Annual membership fees are minimal, and financial assistance is available.
YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles
The YMCA offers after-school care, sports leagues, swim lessons, and enrichment programs. Financial assistance covers up to 100% of costs for qualifying families.
LA’s BEST (Better Educated Students for Tomorrow)
LA’s BEST serves over 25,000 elementary school students across 190 sites in LAUSD. Programs include homework help, enrichment activities, and physical fitness — all completely free.
Fundamental Sports Labs (FSL)
FSL is a Los Angeles nonprofit that will bring sessions on money, AI and handling pressure into the programs kids already attend, taught through the sport they already play. A pilot is planned for 2027 in South LA and Inglewood.
Cost: Families never pay. No fees and no tryouts.

Where FSL Fits
FSL doesn’t run its own leagues or events, so it isn’t a replacement for the programs above. Here is what its sessions will look like inside a program:
- Up to six sessions — Each one 45 to 60 minutes, inside a program your child already attends
- Sport, then skills — Each session will start with the sport the program already plays; then kids will use their own game to learn money skills, how to question AI and how to handle pressure
- Trained, screened coaches — Two college coaches will lead each session, with the program’s own staff in the room
- No AI accounts — Kids never open AI accounts, and no child’s name, face or personal information goes into any AI tool
- Ages 10–17 — Every skill level is welcome
How to Get Started
Kids take part through a program they already attend, so FSL can’t sign a child up directly. Joining the family list is simple:
